Study of the Month, May 2025: Vitamin D & K2 in Implantology – Importance for Bone and Healing

15.12.2025 · 2 min

Introduction

Welcome to the "Study of the Month." This article focuses on the roles of vitamins D and K2 in bone health and their significance in biological dentistry. Both vitamins work synergistically and play crucial roles in successful bone regeneration.

Objectives

The study aimed to:

  • Ensure adequate vitamin D levels (optimal: 40–80 ng/mL)
  • Support calcium absorption and incorporation into the bone matrix
  • Prevent calcium deposits in vessels and organs through vitamin K2
  • Follow a supplementation ratio of 100 mcg K2 per 1,000 IU D3 for balanced intake

Vitamin D3

  • Enhances calcium absorption and bone health
  • Supports immune function and reduces inflammation
  • Target blood level: 40–80 ng/mL
  • Supplementation guidance: <40 ng/mL → 10,000 IU/day; 40–80 ng/mL → 5,000 IU/day; >80 ng/mL → 1,000 IU/day

Vitamin K2

  • Activates osteocalcin and Matrix Gla Protein (MGP)
  • Directs calcium into bones and prevents vascular deposits
  • Recommended: 100 mcg K2 per 1,000 IU D3

Synergy and Benefits

  • D3 + K2 increase bone mineral density
  • Reduce levels of undercarboxylated osteocalcin
  • Protect cardiovascular health

Conclusion

Vitamin D3 enhances calcium absorption, while vitamin K2 directs calcium specifically into the bones. Only together do they exert their full effect: promoting bone stability while simultaneously preventing vascular calcification, a key factor for long-term treatment success.
